My name is Maximilian Port, I am attending class FG13d. I want to write about my experience of representing BBS “Otto von Guericke” at this year`s debating club, where I came 2nd.
The idea of a competition debating club was initiated by Hertie Foundation to enable students to argue various topics controversially. In most cases relevant daily news topics of general interest are given for debating. More details can be found at www.jugend-debattiert.de.
After my participance last year, my intention this year was to reach the final four, which I was successful at doing. The fact that I was the only candidate of our school put some pressure on me and made me extremely happy after I noticed that I had reached my goal to be among the final four.
The final itself meant an extra concentration and preparing, when the topic “Should we as a community or state take up more asylum seekers and refugees?” was given. My part was to debate the issue with counter-arguments. After a heated debate the jury came to the result that I ended up as the 2nd best. I was really happy to have come better than intended and to have been given the chance to represent my school as well.
The next round will be at the debating competition on state level on 11 May.
If anyone has any questions about the issue and procedure, do not hesitate to ask me.
